This initial appraisal and broad assessment of impacts designed to decide whether a proposal meets the planning objectives, fits with relevant transport, land use and other policies and hence should proceed to the detailed appraisal against the Government’s objectives.

The results of the appraisal process will be summarized in a written report. The initial appraisal is intended to be completed by planners at an early stage in the development of a proposal as a check on the suitability of the proposal and the likelihood of its proceeding to the detailed appraisal. In this respect, the initial appraisal is intended to act as part of a prior/initial appraisal.
